Improving English: Themes

Before you read a novel, play or poem, find out what its main themes are.  Make a list of these and, as you read the text, think about how the characters and events relate to each theme.

It’s helpful to make a few notes that you can refer back to and elaborate on as you continue to study the text.  Don’t forget to note the page numbers to enable you to locate these easily in the future.  This may seem a bit of a chore but it makes your first reading more active and memorable, and will encourage you to engage more with the text.
